Day 5 - You Are Here

Day 5 - You Are Here

The first thing I thought of when I read, "You Are Here" for my post today was Robin Williams.  I blogged about this monologue The Dead Poet's Society not to long before Robin passed away.  In The Dead Poet's Society, Robin's character John Keating states:

"We don't read and write poetry because it's cute.  We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race.  And the human race is filled with passion.  And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life.  But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.  To quote from Whitman, 'O me!  O life!  ...of the questions of these recurring; of the endless trains of the faithless...  of cities filled with the foolish; what good amid these, O me, O life?'  Answer.

That you are here..."

The world is still grieving over Robin's passing.  He poured his passion into warming others' hearts and making them laugh through television sets and movie screens across the globe.  Robin left behind John Keating, Genie, Peter Banning, Jack Powell, Teddy Roosevelt, Patch Adams, Mork, and Mrs. Doubtfire, just to name a few.  And he gave us so many incredible lessons about life:

"No matter what people tell you, words and ideas can change the world."

"You ain't never had a friend like me."

"Please don't worry so much.  Because in the end, none of us have very long on this Earth.  Life is fleeting...make your life spectacular."

"...life exists, and identity; that the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse.  That the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse."

I just want to say:

Robin:

You contributed a verse unlike any other.  Know that you are here.  You are still with us.  We are incredibly grateful for the lessons you shared with us throughout your lifetime and we will continue to revisit them again and again as we go through ours.  Your legacy lives on.  We must continue to ask ourselves, "what will [our] verse be?"  May it be just as poetic as yours.
